“I farm with my father-in-law, William Carter. We have two poultry houses and also grow pecans. Last November (2007) we planted 38 acres of alfalfa for the first time. We have had a local dairy farmer buying it, but we also are looking for a secondary market.
“The variety we had intended to plant was not available, so our distributor told me AmeriStand 802 was the proper seed for our growing conditions. As far as I know, we were the first people in this part of Georgia to plant that variety. We use center-pivot irrigation, so the drought is not a problem for us. We are getting ready for our seventh cutting and expect to have eight cuttings overall.
“I’m pretty new to alfalfa production, but from what I have read and the analysis we have seen from the university, it looks like there is a fine line between producing maximum tonnage and forage quality. We have been fortunate to average a ton to the acre while also maintaining 24 percent crude protein.
“I think AmeriStand 802 is a good product. It actually has done better that I had expected, since I didn’t know much about it when we planted. I’m pretty pleased with it and would plant it again.”-- Jack Patton, Baxley, Ga.
